Every reverse osmosis system needs a storage tank — but not every tank is built the same. The three dominant materials in the RO tank market — plastic (polypropylene), steel, and plasteel (composite) — each have distinct advantages, limitations, and ideal applications. Choosing the wrong type for your application can mean premature failure, water quality issues, or unnecessary cost.

2. Food Safety: FDA, NSF, and Material Compliance
For RO tanks, food safety is non-negotiable. The stored water is intended for human consumption, so every material in contact with water — the shell liner, the diaphragm, the water connection — must meet food-grade standards.

- FDA 21 CFR — U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulations for food-contact materials. All HM Tanks RO tank components that contact water are made from FDA-compliant materials.
- NSF/ANSI 58 — Specifically for reverse osmosis drinking water treatment systems. NSF certification involves full-system testing, not just materials compliance.
- RoHS — Restriction of Hazardous Substances. Ensures no lead, mercury, cadmium, or other restricted substances are present in any component.
- BPA-Free — Bisphenol A is a chemical of concern in polycarbonate plastics. Our PP tanks are inherently BPA-free because polypropylene does not contain BPA.
Material safety note: All HM Tanks RO storage tanks use polypropylene (PP) for water-contact surfaces — not polycarbonate. PP is inherently BPA-free and is the material of choice for food-grade water storage. Our tanks also feature a patented antibacterial butyl rubber diaphragm that inhibits microbial growth inside the tank.
3. Diaphragm Technology: The Heart of the RO Tank
The diaphragm is the most critical component of any RO tank. It separates the water chamber from the air pre-charge chamber, and it flexes with every dispense-refill cycle. A diaphragm failure means the tank stops working — and in the worst case, water enters the air chamber and the tank must be replaced entirely.

Usable volume note: A "4.0-gallon" RO tank does not dispense 4.0 gallons of water. The nominal volume includes the air cushion. Actual water delivery is typically 40–50% of nominal capacity (e.g. a 4.0G tank delivers ~1.8–2.0 gallons per drawdown at typical system pressures). Always check the manufacturer's drawdown chart.
